Product Description
Evolution is the process that created the terrible teeth of Tyrannosaurus rex and the complex human brain, clever enough to understand the workings of nature. Young readers will learn how a British naturalist named Charles Darwin studied nature and developed his now-famous concepts of natural selection and survival of the fittest. And how modern-day science has added to our understanding of the theory of evolution.

I picked this up for my 8-year-old 3rd grade daughter. She loves it! It’s a great book that really explains not only the science of evolution, but also strays into many other sciences. It also deals with many of the common objections to evolution in a way that a child can easily understand. Really, this is one of the best science books for kids I’ve seen in a long time. Highly recommended!

I first saw this book on a geology tour with a scientifically minded group, but most of them were not scientists. As the book was passed around, every person on the bus took the time to read it, and we liked what we saw. Don Prothero–the tour guide, a professor of geobiology, and author of Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters–helped fact check this book.
This is not a kid’s book, but a book that anyone with any background (including kids) can enjoy. Colorful drawings fill large pages to show how evolution works. Simple words and sentences fill in details in a way that is technically accurate but not overwhelming. The last page briefly talks about religion by saying that your beliefs are up to you and your community.
Decorate your living room or study or give it as a gift to a curious kid, but don’t hide this work of art on a bookshelf.

The best science books for kids can be enjoyed by a wide age range. For children who are too young to fully understand the concepts, there’s still enough to get them interested (as well as the illustrations). As they get older, they will come back to it and learn more. My favorite scientific books were like this, and so is Daniel Loxton’s “Evolution.” If you want a fun way to teach a child about this essential concept of life on earth, and in the process help instill respect for science and critical thinking, I highly recommend it.

Loxton has filled a gap in the evolutionary record. This book, through wonderful illustrations and clear, simple text explains how Evolution works. He also explains why understanding the organizing principles of natural selection provides answers to many questions about how life came to be the way it is today.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the fundamentals of evolutionary biology.

I bought this book for my eleven year old nephew, but before I gave it to him I had to read it myself. It’s a wonderful book! Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be gives a good introduction to the most important fact of biology, and does it in an engaging way. Using beautiful illustrations and language that is neither too complicated nor too condescending for children, Loxton teaches not only how and why evolution works, but also a history of its discovery by Darwin. It’s short enough to finish in one sitting, but full of information every kid (and adult) should know about how life became what it is.
